Black Hog Brewing Co. in Oxford wins gold medal for its Granola Brown Ale in World Cup Beer Competition

They have some bragging rights at the Black Hog Brewing Co. in Oxford.

The company took home the gold medal for its Granola Brown Ale in the American Brown Ale Style category at the World Beer Cup competition on May 6 in Philadelphia.

The Brewers Association developed the biannual World Beer Cup Competition in 1996 to celebrate the art and science of brewing, according to its website.

The World Beer Cup is referred to as “The Olympics of Beer Competitions” with 1,907 breweries participating this year in 96 categories.

There were a total of 6,596 beers entered into the contest from 55 countries. The event used 253 judges from 31 countries.

The average number of beers in each competitive category was 69, up from 50 in 2014, according to the website.

The brewery, in a press release, said Tyler Jones, its brewmaster, jumped with joy on his first international award.

“This is huge! We are so excited and truly appreciate this as a sign that all the hard work we’ve put in over the past two years is being recognized by the most discerning judges in the beer world!” Jones said in the release.

Black Hog Brewing Co. is open for tastings Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

In addition to the brewing company, Jason Sobocinski owns Caseus Fromagerie Bistro in New Haven; The Cheese Truck; Ordinary, also in New Haven; Mystic Cheese Co.; and Smoke Box BBQ.
